Car Preparation

Always prepare your car to the highest standard you can before a big race and if you have never raced at a particular track before ask other drivers for any information on what type of tyres and set up tips for your car. If you have confidence in your machinery it is one less thing to worry about on race day.

The Day Before

Try to make it to the practise day before a big race as most of the top drivers will be there. Do not spend all day just running round the track wasting tyres and fuel and generally wearing out your car...If you watch the top drivers, they seem to be on the track a lot don’t they? But what they are doing is trying to get the best set up on the car for all different conditions - so watch what they do and ask questions!

It Can Always Be Better

Never be totally happy with your car as it can always go quicker, but above all...always drive within your own abilities. Try to get to a stage where you can tell on any part of the circuit where the car is good and where the car could be better and also be able to adjust the car accordingly, get to this stage and you should be readily reaching the A final.

Don’t Just Drive In Summer

With winter coming up don’t just put the car away until next season, if possible try to do some wet weather driving.

How Do I Find The Nearest Place To Race My Car?

The easiest way is to use the power of the internet to locate the clubs/tracks nearest to you. Generally a good place to start is the national racing organisation for your country or region. For the UK this is the BRCA. Alternatively, ask a member of staff in your local model shop.

Use Good Quality Threadlock

Always use good quality thread lock, especially on the drive train and the steering king pin bolts. So many peoples races come to an early finish because they use poor quality thread lock.

Ask For Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask a top, works, or sponsored driver for advice. A part of sponsorship is to promote the products they use, and that includes giving you help and advice (don’t ask just before one of their races though!).

Don’t Get Downhearted

If you have just had a disappointing meeting (broken down or finished lower down than you think you should have done), don’t just put the car away and wait until the next meeting. Think about what went wrong and what you could do to prevent it happening again.

Check Your Tyres

Always check the way your tyres are wearing after each run. From that you can tell whether you are running the correct compound, but also whether you have the toe in and camber adjustments set some where near right.

Use Tyres To Suit You

The speed you drive affects your tyre choice as much as the track temperature. Even if you are only 0.5 to 1 second a lap slower than the top drivers on the day, you will probably be better using a tyre compound softer than they are.

Get To Know Your Transmitter

If you choose to use a fully programmable transmitter (Futaba FF3, 3VC, Magnum etc), learn how to operate and use its functions correctly. I have seen several transmitters with some very strange programs, which actually made the car harder to drive!

Understand The Advice

When you take advice from a top driver, always try to understand the reason that he/she has made the suggestion. If your not sure, ask. By doing this you will learn a lot more, because you will start to understand what adjustments have which effect on the car. Don’t just make adjustments because someone told you to, think about what you are doing.

Car preparation is very important, never assume that something is OK, because it was the last time you raced. Ignore your car and it will let you down, usually in a final!

Look After Your Radio Equipment

Never take chances with your radio control system. You can have the fastest and best handling car at the meeting but if you loose control because of poorly installed or maintained equipment you will end up collecting spares from your model shop instead of collecting trophies!

Always remember; To finish first, first you must finish. Practice makes perfect. Assumption is the mother of all mistakes. It’s a hobby, so have fun and enjoy it!

Which Scale?

The answer to this question is beyond the scope of this FAQ. Your best plan of action is to locate your nearest track and ask the people attending. Make sure to ask a few people and try not to pick a time when they are busy, after all, they are normally there to race. Ultimately the choice is yours, but pick a class/scale that both appeals to you and attracts sufficient entries to generate the level of competition you will feel happy with.

How Much Does It Cost?

How much you spend on model car racing depends on your own personal attitude. If you insist on having every possible performance enhancing add-on there is, then it can get quite expensive. Alternatively, if you take your time to learn how to set-up cars and maintain them properly, you can achieve good results without spending vast amounts of money. The cost part of your racing can also be greatly affected by your choice of car and its associated class, as some classes of cars are competitive “out of the box”, with very few upgrades being available or allowed.
